The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) reviewed its trout stream designations in the Vermillion River Watershed. The DNR designated four stream reaches flowing into the Vermillion River’s South Branch as trout streams. The DNR removed trout stream designation from a segment in New Market Township that flows into the Vermillion River and other segments that formerly flowed from the Metropolitan Council Empire Wastewater Treatment Plant. See how the stream designation has been changed on the updated map.

Many trout streams flow through private land, and fishing is allowed only with the landowner’s permission. A few tips to improve relations with landowners who allow fishing access on their property:

  • Ask permission if you aren’t certain the land is public.
  • Don’t discard wrappers, bait containers, fishing line or other litter beside the stream. Take litter home, remove litter left by others, and dispose of litter properly.
  • Leave gates and fences as you found them.
  • Be quiet and respectful if cattle are present.
  • Make some effort to thank the landowner who allows fishing access.

Aquatic invasive species laws require boaters and anglers to:

  • Clean their watercraft of aquatic plants and prohibited invasive species.
  • Drain all water by removing drain plugs and keeping them out during transport.
  • Dispose of unwanted bait in the trash.
