Dakota County offers Safe Drinking Water Grant for private well users

Do you get your drinking water from a private well in Dakota County? Concerned about potential chemicals in the water?

A Safe Drinking Water Grant program from the County could help eligible homes replace contaminated wells or install water treatment systems. To be eligible, a landowner or renter with a private well must:

  • Use a private well as the primary source of drinking water for a residence in Dakota County
  • Well water must exceed the Minnesota Department of Health drinking water grant guidelines of any of the following:
    • Arsenic – 2 micrograms per liter or higher
    • Manganese – 0.100 milligrams per liter or higher
    • Nitrate – 10 milligrams per liter or higher
    • Coliform Bacteria – positive test result
    • Lead – any detection

Everyone with a private well is encouraged to test their water quality regularly. Free water test kits are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. For information on the Safe Drinking Water Grant and how to apply, as well as access the test kits, visit the Dakota County website.

Funding for the Safe Drinking Water Grant is provided by the Minnesota Department of Health to Dakota County from the Minnesota Clean Water Fund, one of four funds established by the 2008 Minnesota Clean Water, Land, and Legacy Amendment approved by voters.
