VRWJPO, Lakeville install hydrodynamic separator (HDS) on 205th St.
To reduce sediment loading in South Creek-Vermillion River, a prefabricated hydrodynamic separator (HDS) was installed in October 2024 at the intersection of 205th Street and Hollins Avenue W. in Lakeville.
An HDS is a stormwater device that uses cyclonic forces in a circular separation unit to remove pollutants in stormwater runoff, namely sediment. The HDS that was installed was designed with a flow-through structure that diverts low-flow storm events (more frequent rainfall events that carry more sediment) to the separation chamber.
The project included surface removals and excavation to place the structure(s), installation of HDS and related piping and appurtenances, backfill, compaction, and resurfacing. The HDS should reduce sediment loading into South Creek by 1,700 lbs. per year. The project was funded in part by the VRWJPO. The system will be owned and maintained by the City of Lakeville.
