Create beautiful gardens to keep our waters clean! Design a native garden. Create a raingarden. Stabilize shorelines. Attend a free Landscaping for Clean Water presentation to see dozens of beautiful, inspirational and affordable garden designs using native plants and helping clean our waters. After attending you can sign up to receive design and installation assistance. Some Dakota County residents will also qualify for a $250 grant to install their new gardens. Pre-register with Dakota County SWCD.

It’s easy, make and take a rain barrel.
What’s one of the simplest, high-impact ways to save water and help protect our watershed? Using a rain barrel.
The workshop will begin with a presentation on how home lawn and garden practices impact our waters and how we can make a difference. Next, we’ll discuss the watershed-friendly benefits of rain barrels in more detail, then review how to build, incorporate, install and maintain them.
With guidance from Friends of the Mississippi River staff, participants will then build their very own rain barrel to take home following the workshop. Participants will receive the necessary parts ($35 per kit) and be guided through the process of converting used syrup barrels from Great Lakes Coca-Cola of Eagan, into a rain barrel to take home and install.
Join us for an evening of H2O and hops at Hastings’ newest watering hole, Spiral Brewery! Local experts from Friends of the Mississippi River (FMR) and Hastings Environmental Protectors (HEP) will highlight important trends and emerging issues facing the Vermillion Watershed. Learn about local efforts to improve water quality and increase habitat restoration and biodiversity – plus actions you can take in your home and yard to help do your part.
Following the presentation, we’ll have an informal Q & A session. To make sure everyone has a chance to ask questions, and due to limited seating, advance registration required.
This event is part of the Vermillion Stewards program, helping Vermillion River Watershed residents learn about the local watershed while working to protect and enhance its unique natural resources.
